I receive too many emails

Do you feel like you receive too many emails? Have you asked yourself why we send all these emails to you and if you can unsubscribe?

Then this answer is for you.

Can I unsubscribe from the HPC mailinglists?

The short answer is: partly.

Any user of our HPC systems will be automatically subscribed to two mailing lists:

  • hpc-announce-[system-name], important announcements, changes, outages - required subscription
  • hpc-news-[system-name], other information, invitations to free courses, workshops or events - optional

You can unsubscribe / opt out of receiving the news emails in the HPC Project Portal under your account settings. Click the user icon in the upper right corner, select Account and uncheck Receive HPC news via e-mail.

You cannot unsubscribe from the announcement emails. Hear us out.

Why can’t I unsubscribe from the announcements?

You might be inclined to ignore or even outright delete our announcement emails. Please don’t. They contain important information that often affect you personally and that you should know when using our HPC systems.

We often get support requests that could have been avoided if people would have read the announcements. Please be respectful of our support team’s time and read your email before asking if something changed, why nodes are unavailable, etc. Of course you are very welcome to ask if anything is unclear to you or you have follow-up questions that were not answered in the announcements.

We do our best to only send announcements that are relevant for most if not all of our users and we have three separate mailing lists for different user groups, so you will only receive messages that affect the parts of our system you use. Of course you are free to ignore or just skim through these emails when you’re not currently running any jobs or aren’t actively using the system. But when you return, we would ask you to please quickly check the larger announcements for any changes that might have happened in the meantime.

In case you missed any announcement, can’t find the mail any more or accidentally/already deleted the email, you can check our mailing list archives online.
